Description
KÜSEL, Melchior – On the Life, Deeds and Adventures of the Illustrious Greek Hero and Prince of Ithaca, Ulysses, which befell him after the conquest of the Asian Kingdom and the city of Troy … Augsburg, Johann Ulrich Kraus, 1705. In-8, engraved title page (4) folios. , 58 figures engraved on copper by Melchior Küsel (1626–1683) and reproduced by his son-in-law Johann Ulrich Kraus (1655–1719), marbled fawn calfskin binding, decorated ribbed spine. This series offers one of the few records of the frescoes executed at the Château de Fontainebleau by Le Primatice. The Gallery of Ulysses, begun in 1540 by the painter, was completed after his death sometime after 1570, but was destroyed in 1738. A Flemish artist, Theodor Van Thulden (1606–1669), an Antwerp pupil of Abraham Blyenburch and Rubens, had made copies of them, which he engraved and which were published in Paris in 1643 and 1640, under the title *La Gallerie du Chasteau Royal de Fontaine-Bleau, representant les Travaux d’Ulysse dessines par F. Primatice*. Johann Ulrich Kraus’s edition is a faithful copy, albeit in a smaller format.
