Description
AULNOY, Countess of] – Memoirs of the Spanish Court. Paris: Claude Barbin, 1692. 2 vols. in-12, (4) folios, 416 pp.; 415 (1) pp., marbled fawn calf with the publisher’s mark, decorated ribbed spine.
LEVER 264 (year 1690). Edition not cited in Tchémerzine-Scheler, who describes only the original (1690). Second edition of these memoirs, presenting in an elegant and accessible style the customs, political life and high society of the Court. They enjoyed immense success, much like the historical novels then in vogue. It is thought that the future author of fairy tales was in Spain in 1679, where she had gone to join her mother, an adventuress in the government’s employ. V. Hugo drew on them for many of the characters in *Hernani* and *Ruy Blas*, and they were admired by Taine and Barbey d’Aurevilly.
