ROSSET, François de – The Tragic Stories of Our Time. Containing the tragic and lamentable deaths of several individuals, brought about by their ambitions, unbridled love affairs, sorcery, theft and plunder, and by other diverse and memorable misfortunes. Latest edition, revised and corrected of errors that had crept into previous printings, and expanded to include the stories of the Ladies of Ganges, of Brinvilliers, and also of several other highly remarkable tales which have not yet been published. Lyon, Benoist Vignieu, 1708. 8vo, (4) folios, 647 (1) pp., yellowed, foxed paper; brown half-leather binding; ribbed spine, slightly faded; small stains. This edition comprises 36 tragic stories, compared with 19 in the first edition. These are accounts drawn from contemporary news stories since the first edition in 1614, all of which share a tragic ending. They are often of the utmost cruelty. One example is ‘the horrible and appalling sorcery of Louis Gaufridy, a priest from Marseille’. This edition has been expanded to include new cases: *The Adventures of the Princess of Ponthieu* – *The Story of a Parisian Second-hand Cloth Dealer* – *The Story of a German Lady Whose Husband Had Locked Her Away in a Horrible Prison for the Rest of Her Days*.
