Description
MENESTRIER, Father Claude François - *Philosophia Imaginum id est Sylloge Symbolorum amplissima*, in which the most numerous images of kings, princes, nobles, illustrious women, scholars and other eminent men in Europe have been gathered with the utmost care and presented in a methodical and concise manner. Amsterdam and Danzig, Jansson Waesberghe, 1695. In-8, (8) ff., 847 pp., 78 copper-engraved emblems in the text, ivory vellum with flaps, as described by ALLUT, p. 162. PRAZ 423. LANDWEHR no. 55. First Latin edition of the work published in French in 1682 under the title: *La Philosophie des images*, comprising an extensive collection of mottos, and a critique of all works that have been written on this subject. The first 94 pages contain the assessments of fifty authors who have written on symbols. The mottos are classified under 78 headings, each illustrated with an emblem: coelum et astra, sol, aurora et lumen, planetae et constellationes, luna, astra sub figuris cum humanis, ignes erratici, etc. They are given in Latin and French, followed by a commentary. As Allut points out, this edition has a much richer iconography than the first, which contained only a few woodcuts.
