AUDIGUIER, Vital d’ – *The Story of the Love of Lysander and Callisto*. Amsterdam, Henry and Theodore Boom, 1679. Small 12mo, 408. pp. (including frontispiece), 16 illustrations, light brown calfskin, slightly worn, decorated ribbed spine. WILLEMS 1309. LEVER 216. DRUJON I, 474. First published in Paris in 1616. Vital d’Audiguier (1529?–1624), Lord of La Menor in the Rouergue region, belonged to the inner circle of Marguerite de Valois, where most of the renowned men of letters gathered. He combined an adventurous life with his imaginative gifts: ‘my pen bears the mark // Of a man who carries at his side // The blade from which it is cut.’ The story is set during the reign of Henry IV. Audiguier bears witness to the Christian fervour that stirred people’s souls. Several characters in the novel enter religious life: Lidian becomes a hermit at Mont-Serrat, Clairange becomes a Capuchin friar. Lysander himself, before happily uniting with Caliste, tried his hand at the anchoritic life on Mont Valérien.
