AUBIGNAC, François, Hédelin, Abbé d’ – *La Pratique du Théâtre*. A work essential to all those who wish to devote themselves to the composition of dramatic poems. Paris, Antoine de Sommaville, 1657. In-4, (2) ff., 514 pp., (3) ff. including errata, paper slightly yellowed, foxing, supple vellum binding, coat of arms in the centre. SOLEINNE V, Part 1, no. 382. First edition. The work concludes with *An Analysis of Sophocles’ Ajax*, *A Critique of the Tragedy Entitled *Pentheus*, written on the spot and sent to Cardinal de Richelieu*, and *A Plan for the Re-establishment of the Théâtre-Français*. ‘We note in this last play a curious fact which has not been reported elsewhere: the author states that young debauchees constantly disrupted the performances, spread terror everywhere and often committed murders there’ (Soleinne). Bearing the coat of arms of Neufville de Villeroy, born in Versailles in 1695, Governor of Lyonnais, Forez and Beaujolais, Captain of the hunts at Corbeil and Sénart. (OHR 178). This could be the copy owned by Soleinne, described as bound in parchment bearing the coat of arms. His library was sold in 1845.
