[JANSENISM] – NOUET, Jacques & ANNAT, François, S.J.] - Responses to the *Lettres provinciales* published by the secretary of Port-Royal, against the Fathers of the Society of Jesus. On the subject of the morality of the said Fathers. Liège, Jean Mathias Hovius, 1658. Small 12mo, LXXXVI, 452 pp., (2) ff., a few small marginal tears without loss of text, ivory-coloured vellum from the publisher, a few light stains on the front cover. First edition published in the very same year as the *Lettres provinciales*. Fathers Nouet and Annat were tasked with refuting the *Lettres provinciales*, which they follow with lengthy commentaries. They have included a number of appended documents relating to the controversy. In a preliminary letter, Father Nouet suggested that the spirit of the *Lettres provinciales* was not unrelated to the work by the Protestant minister Pierre Du Moulin: *On Traditions and the Perfection and Sufficiency of Holy Scripture*, published in Geneva in 1632.
