Description
CALLIERES, François de – A Poetic History of the War Recently Declared between the Ancients and the Moderns. Amsterdam, based on the copy printed in Paris, (1688). Small 12mo, (12) folios, 263 pp., fold-out plate depicting the various literary movements in battle formation, 18th-century fawn calfskin, gilt chain on the covers, plain decorated spine.
The Poetic History is, like Furetière’s *Nouvelle allégorique* and Guéret’s *Parnasse réformé*, one of those literary satires in dramatic form, for which Lucian provided the models. The author recounts that, at a meeting of the Academy in the Louvre, Perrault has just read *Le Siècle de Louis le Grand*, which divides the Academy into two opposing camps. Immediately, Fame spreads alarm as far as Parnassus itself, and the most illustrious of the ancients and moderns who dwell on the sacred mountain are divided just as the Academy is. (See Hippolyte RIGAULT, *History of the Quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns*, pp. 213–215).
