Description
POLYBIUS – The History of Polybius, newly translated from the Greek by Dom Vincent Thuillier. With a commentary or treatise on military science, enriched with critical and historical notes, in which all the major aspects of warfare, whether offensive or defensive, are explained, demonstrated and illustrated with diagrams by M. de Folard. Paris, Gandouin, Giffart, etc., 1727–1730. 6 vols. in-4, fawn calf marbled with the publisher’s mark, decorated ribbed spine. BRUNET IV, 791. First edition of Folard’s commentaries. Portrait of the Minister of War, Claude Le Blanc; 3 folding maps and 126 plates, most of which are fold-out or spread across two pages. Numerous vignettes by Rigaud or Mathey. Folard’s commentaries, set out in two columns, make up the bulk of the work and constitute a treatise on military tactics intended for his contemporaries. At the beginning is his *Treatise on the Column*, in which he opposed the use of deep order in attack—a work that sparked considerable controversy.
