Description
POELLNITZ, Baron de] – *La Saxe galante*. Amsterdam, Published by the Company, 1734. 12mo, (1) fol., 416 pp., title in red, inscription on the title page, stamp of the library Stahremberg on the flyleaf, fawn half-calf with corner caps, plain spine with decoration. GAY III, 1078. JONES 54. First edition of a scandalous novel which has been reprinted several times. This work by Baron von Poellnitz is a most audacious plagiarism. It is none other than the charming novel *The Princess of Clèves* by Madame de La Fayette, which the Baron de Poellnitz published under his own name, simply changing the characters’ names and the setting of the story. As for the sentences and style, he did not even bother to disguise them. According to a note by Paulmy (Marie-Antoinette’s Library at Trianon, p. 44) and the *Bulletin du bouquiniste*, eleventh year, p. 107, this highly enjoyable and amusing novel is said to be the work of the Chevalier de Solignac in his youth, who witnessed most of the adventures he recounts. It is, in fact, a daring glorification of the amorous liaisons of the late Frederick Augustus I of Saxony, King of Poland in 1697.
