ARGONNE, Bonaventure d’ – Critical Reflections on Monsieur de La Bruyère’s *Characters*. Paris, Michel Brunet, 1701. A Carthusian monk known by the pseudonyms Moncade or Vigneul-Marville, Bonaventure d’Argonne died in 1704 at the Carthusian monastery of Gaillon. His *Mélanges de littérature* (3 vols., 1701) are filled with curious and far-fetched anecdotes. Voltaire said of him that he was ‘the only Carthusian to have cultivated literature’. A controversial critique of La Bruyère’s *Caractères*, which earned him a reply from P.-J. Brillon (1631–1710), Intendant-General to the Duke of Maine, who had been an acquaintance of La Bruyère.
