Description
[BOUCHER, Jean] – A Defence of Jehan Chastel of Paris, who was put to death, and of the fathers and scholars of the Society of Jesus, banished from the Kingdom of France. Against the Parliamentary decree issued against them in Paris on 29 December 1594. Divided into five parts. By François de Verone, Constantin. S. l, 1595. Small 8vo, (6) ff., 244 pp., (1) f., paper slightly yellowed, fawn half-calf. BRUNET V, 1146 (who attributes it to François de Verone). PEIGNOT I, 45. SHF no. 3122. First edition cited by Brunet. Jean Chastel, the perpetrator of an assassination attempt on Henry IV on 27 December 1594, was sentenced to the punishment meted out to regicides, leading that same month to the proscription of the Jesuits, who were suspected of having instigated his act. He was regarded as a martyr by the League, which had not accepted Henry IV’s abjuration. Jean Boucher (1575–1594), parish priest of Saint-Benoist and one of the most militant members of the League in Paris, is said to be the author of this pamphlet. He seeks to demonstrate that ‘Chastel’s act is just… is heroic’, and that the Court’s judgement against him and the Jesuits is unfounded. The doctrine of tyrannicide draws on the Protestants themselves, ‘though they change their tune according to the ebb and flow of their affairs’; citing Junius Brutus, Buchanan, Bodin (classified among the Reformers), and Bèze. The author demonstrates the incompetence of Henry IV, even after his so-called conversion, and refutes *De la juste et canonique absolution*, as well as Servin’s indictment and Arnauld’s defence. The book, published several times despite being banned, fuelled political debate right up until the Revolution.
