JOUIN, Nicolas] – *Les Préjugés démasqués* (Prejudices Unmasked) in Sarcelois dialect verse. Portmahon (Paris?), 1756. In-12, (4) folios, 94 pp., half-mar. ochre, smooth spine decorated with grotesque motifs (HONNELAÎTRE). First edition. The author, a jeweller born in Chartres in 1684, was a banker in Paris, where he died in 1757. A Jansenist pamphleteer, he had been imprisoned in the Bastille two years earlier because of numerous rhyming tirades known as ‘les sarcellades’, in which, whilst employing satire, he nevertheless put forward entirely serious arguments against the enemies of the Jansenists. As was his custom, he employs the dialect of the Paris region. The reference to ‘Portmahon’ alludes to the French capture of the island of Minorca from the English on 29 June 1756.
