Description
GIRAC, Paul Thomas de – Response by M. de Girac to M. Costar’s Defence of the Works of M. de Voiture. With some remarks on his interviews. Paris, Augustin Courbé, 1655. In-4, frontispiece, (7) leaves, 286 pp., (8) leaves, (2) leaves (privileges and errata), marbled brown calf from the publisher, decorated ribbed spine, upper cap repaired, endpapers replaced.
First edition. In 1653, Costar’s *Defence of the Works of Monsieur de Voiture* had been published; this was a commissioned work intended to establish Balzac’s supremacy over Voiture in matters of eloquence, but, quite the contrary, Costar, whilst pretending to humour Balzac, in fact praised Voiture. Balzac had died in 1654 after entrusting his friend and fellow Angoumois native, Girac, with his defence. This was followed by an exchange of replies and counter-replies between the two critics, no doubt fuelled by public interest. At the end is Girac’s Latin dissertation addressed to Balzac, previously published in 1652 and 1654 (Continued in:) [COSTAR, Pierre] – Continuation of the Defence of the Works of Mr de Voiture to Monsieur Ménage. Paris, Augustin Courbé, 1655. (8) ff., 425 pp., (18) ff. First edition dedicated to Cardinal Mazarin.
