JONES 3, GAY III, 135. First published in 1701, this novel is inspired by a true story: a woman who is the victim of a violent and jealous husband who wishes to rid himself of her by selling her to a pirate. A veritable odyssey takes us through Genoa, a desert island, the Morea, Dulcigno, Malta and Rome. The pirate, a renegade originally from La Rochelle, falls in love with the Marquise de Fresne and is prepared to return to Christianity to marry her. Rome, despite its generosity, refuses to annul the first marriage. Alongside numerous twists and turns – in which the Marquise even fires a shot – this novel makes a case for divorce. (V. Turbet-Delof, *Maghreb in French Literature*, no. 277).
