Description
POINSINET DE SIVRY] – *La Berlue*. London, *A l’Enseigne du Lynx* (Paris), 1759. 16mo, 166 pp., red half-marbled Bradel binding, gilt head.
The Grimm-Diderot correspondence passes harsh judgement on this work: “La Berlue is the title of the book and the author’s affliction. This man claims he has read nothing, and this is evident from his judgements. It is a satire on all peoples, all states, and all individuals, yet lacking in subtlety, vigour, wit and taste...” It was, however, reprinted several times and is even said to have been banned in 1826 (see Drujon, p. 48). Grimod de la Reynière is accused of having entirely plagiarised *La Berlue* in his *Lorgnette philosophique*, published in 1785. Ex-libris engraved by Paul Lacombe.
