THE STORY OF CAMOUFLET – sovereign ruler of the Empire of Equivopolis. Equivopolis (Paris, Jean-Baptiste Langlois), 1751. In-12, (6) ff., 84 pp., a few foxing spots, COHEN 487. HARTIG & SOBOUL 53. A carnival-style comedy playing on double entendres and nonsense (a reference to the Land of Cocagne). The ‘camouflet’ is embodied in the main character of a seemingly light-hearted tale, which—rather laboriously—piles up puns whilst criticising the effects of love and power. The title page features a vignette by Jean Guillaume Moitte, after François-Thomas Mondon, which summarises the theme. Two little cupids are blowing a slap in each other’s faces, comically contradicting a quotation taken from the heroic ballet *Zaïde*.
