GORSAS, Antoine-Joseph] – *The Wandering Donkey, or Critès Led About by his Donkey*; A Masterpiece serving as an Apology for the Taste, Manners, Wit, and Discoveries of the Century. First edition, revised and corrected, and preceded by a Preface to the Mosaic, in the very latest style. Pamplona, published by Démocrite; Paris, published by the author, Mme Veuve Duchesne, etc., 1786. In-8, (1) folio, 302 pp., (1) folio, one engraving depicting Gorsas in the company of a donkey with the inscription: ‘‘The most foolish of the three is not the one you might think’”, half-green morocco, decorated ribbed spine. First edition. He founded a school in Versailles and devoted himself to poetry, unfortunately of a satirical nature: he made enemies in all walks of life. Consequently, in 1788, he was imprisoned at Bicêtre, accused of corrupting the morals of his pupils. A journalist and deputy to the Convention, he was guillotined in 1793 after denouncing revolutionary fanaticism.
