LA PORTE, M. de – Memoirs of M. de La Porte, First Chamberlain to Louis XIV. Containing various details concerning the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Geneva, 1756. Small 12mo, 324 pp., brown calfskin with graining, decorated ribbed spine, upper cap restored. SHF 724. 2nd edition cited. After spending a few years in Saumur, he was recalled to court in 1643 and appointed valet-de-chambre to the young Louis XIV; in this privileged position, he devoted himself chiefly to making Mazarin odious to the Regent and the King. Consequently, the all-powerful cardinal forced him to relinquish his post in 1653. He was not to return to favour until 1666, but played no further role. He recounted the adventures that befell him at court whilst he was in service there, and in doing so came to describe the people and the intrigues within the kings’ inner circle.
