Description
STACE – Stace’s *Achilleid*. A delightful poem comprising five books, the first part of which contains the entire story of Achilles’ youth. Translated into verse, with the beginning of the *Thebaid* (...) by M. D. M. A. D. V (Followed by:) Tibullus and Propertius. Paris, Jacques Langlois, 1678. In-4, 140, 111, 254 pp., a few leaves yellowed or with browning, brown grained calfskin as per the title page, triple thread-bound. gilded on the covers, coat of arms in the centre, crowned monogram in the corners, ribbed spine decorated with the crowned monogram between the ribs, caps and endpapers restored. TOINET (Heroic Poems) 260. First editions of these verse translations by Michel de Marolles. He had previously published prose translations in 1658, 1653 and 1654. With *L’Achilléide*, Marolles sought to try his hand at the genre of the epic poem, noble par excellence. The myth was revived at the Opera in 1687 in a tragedy by Campistron with music by Lulli. To the coat of arms and monogram of Julie d’Angennes, Duchess of Montausier (1607–1671), for whom the famous ‘Guirlande de Julie’ was composed (OHR pl. 451). Two years later, he dedicated his translation of Athenaeus to the Duke of Montausier.
