A COLLECTION OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VERSES – by Messrs de Malherbe, Racan, Maynard, Bois-Robert, Monfuron, Lingendes, Touvant, Motin De Lestoile and various other authors, among the most distinguished minds at Court. Revised, corrected and expanded. Paris, Pierre Mettayer, 1638. Small 8vo, XXVI, 930 pp., yellowed paper, a few faint watermarks, foxing, small marginal verses, occasionally trimmed short at the top, brown grained calf from the original, decorated ribbed spine, small stamp. LACHÈVRE I, 69. Similar to the 1630 collection—the last published by Toussaint du Bray—it brings together 518 pieces. One of the first to have adopted classification by author. It therefore includes the poems of Malherbe (pp. 1–150), Racan (pp. 151–265), Maynard (pp. 266–495) and Boisrobert (pp. 497–592) ; followed by pages containing poems by Monfuron, Lingendes, Touvant, Motin (pp. 730–833), etc. Ex-libris by Pierre Louis Baudot (1760–1819), a Burgundian numismatist and archaeologist, a handwritten bookplate by the historian Pierre-Henri Ribault de Laugardière (Nontron 1814–1886), and one by His Eminence Cardinal Louis-Ernest Dubois, Archbishop of Rouen.
