Description
DUPUY, Pierre] – History of the Most Illustrious Favourites, Ancient and Modern. Compiled by the late Mr P. D. P. With an account of events following the death of the Marshal d’Ancre. Paris, printed at Leiden by Jean Elsevier, 1659. In-12, (8) ff., 514, 120 pp., ivory-coloured vellum.
WILLEMS 852. SHF 1602. Contains, with separate pagination, an account of the death of Marshal d’Ancre (Concino Concini). This account was long attributed to the Keeper of the Seals, Michel de Marillac: according to a note found in the Archives Étrangères (France, 364, f° 90 recto), the true author is Cadenet, Marshal Duke of Chaulnes, brother of the future Duke of Luynes. As Cadenet was involved in the events leading up to Concini’s assassination, his account is highly accurate. He recounts the events impartially and vividly: the details he provides are invaluable and his account is a document of the highest order.
