FOLENGO, Théophile – *Histoire maccaronique de Merlin Coccaie, prototype de Rabelais*. Paris, Toussaincts du Bray, 1606 (1734). 2 vols., small 12mo, VIII, 370 pp.; (1) fol., 419 pp., ivory vellum with flaps, plain spine with calligraphic ornamentation and title, gilt edges. BRUNET II, 1319. These burlesque poems, composed in Latin, were first published in 1517. This edition is based on that of 1606, which is the first French edition. ‘Macaronic verses’ are defined as rhymes filled with Latin words, Italian words, and words composed of both languages; they are called ‘macaronic’ because they resemble macarons, which are made of flour, cheese and butter. It is claimed that Rabelais sought to imitate this work in part, and that he included the best passages from it in his *Pantagruel*.
