LA NOUE, François de – Political and Military Discourses by Sieur de La Noue. Collected and edited by Sieur du Fresnes, and dedicated to the Most Christian King Henry IV of that name. (Geneva), Jacob tœr, 1596. In-16, (16) folios including a portrait of Henry IV, 1019 pp., (18) folios, paper slightly yellowed, vellum with flaps on the spine, small stains on the covers. SHF (Hauser, III) no. 1459 (first ed. 1587). Reflections of a soldier converted to Calvinism (1558) who took part in the Wars of Religion. He endeavours to remain impartial when discussing the unrest caused by these conflicts (from 1562 to 1572). The Discourses also contain numerous insightful observations and remarks on the army, the nobility, foreign and civil wars, tolerance, the Crusades and Franco-Turkish relations.
