BELLEFOREST, François de – (The third) volume of tragic tales, drawn from the Italian works of Bandel, containing eighteen tales translated and embellished with the author’s own additions. By François de Belleforest of Cominges. Paris, Gabriel Buon, 1572. In-16, (8) pp., 514 pp., (6) pp., bound copy; the top of the title page is missing, resulting in the loss of the first line of text; yellowed paper; endpapers replaced; fawn calfskin from the edition, double stitching. gilt on the covers, medallion in the centre, fleurons at the corners with interlacing, gilt edges. INDEX AURELIENSIS III, 112.189. The third volume alone out of five published, containing eighteen stories. Matteo Bandello’s short stories were published in Lucca from 1554 onwards, the last one in Lyon in 1573.
