AUVRAY, Jean – *Le Banquet des muses ou les Diverses satires du Sieur Auvray*. Containing several poems not yet published or in print. Also included is *The Discovery of Innocence*, a tragicomedy by the same author. Rouen, David Ferrand, 1628. 8vo, (4) folios, 408 pp.; (3) ff., 57 pp., yellowed paper, trimmed slightly short, marbled fawn calf, triple gold thread on the covers, ribbed spine decorated with gold thread, internal dentation. BRUNET I, 575. FRERE I, 56. LACHEVRE (Free and Satirical Poems) 82. CIOR 9028. Second expanded edition, also found dated 1627 (first edition 1623). A poet from Rouen, believed to have been born around 1580, all of whose works were published in Rouen between 1608 and 1636, during which time he practised as a surgeon. He was a friend of his regular printer, David Ferrand, who published the famous gazette, *La Muze Normande*. He died around 1630. His body of work revolves around two very distinct strands: one religious (Oeuvres Sainctes, 1626) and the other satirical. Dedicated to Charles Maynard, President of the Parliament of Rouen, the satires are written in a very free style in the form of bawdy or vulgar verse reminiscent of the world of Gautier Garguille or d’Angoulevent, though at times they adopt a more serious tone. He approves of the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, hurls a few insults at the Calvinists of Montauban, composes a ‘Complaint of France in the Year 1615’, ‘Stances’ presented to the Queen at Blois in 1615, and a ‘Discourse on Dreams’ addressed to Dr Bérault, which is intended to be philosophical. First edition, followed by *L’Innocence découverte*, a tragicomedy in five acts, first published in Rouen in 1609. Some malicious early critics claimed that Racine had used it as a basis for *Phèdre*. Ex-libris of E.-M. Bancel. This collector, who dispersed his library in 1882, bequeathed to the Louvre in 1884 a painting by Jean Perréal, *The Betrothal of Charles VIII*.
