FURETIÈRE, Antoine – Outline and design of the allegorical and tragic-burlesque poem entitled *Les Couches de l’Académie*. Amsterdam, Perre Brunel, 1687. Small 12mo, 60 pp., a few foxing spots, endpapers replaced, fawn calfskin of the edition, decorated ribbed spine. TCH II, 403. First edition. Furetière had been expelled from the Académie française on 22 January 1685 for his intention to publish a rival dictionary. An allegory recounting the circumstances surrounding the creation of the Académie’s dictionary. According to Furetière, this dictionary would be born in the form of a wretched foetus.
