Description
BARENGER, Father André Thomas – *The Faithful Guide to True Glory*, presented to His Grace the Duke of Burgundy. Paris: Pierre Landry, 1688. In-12, 102 folios comprising the title page, the approval, the preface, the introduction (4) folios, 49 folios with the text on the reverse engraved in italics and 49 full-page illustrations, half-mar. red in Bradel style, smooth spine with decoration (BONNELAITRE). Dedicated to Louis of France (1682–1712), Duke of Burgundy. The work is entirely engraved in intaglio. Many of the figures are signed by F. Ertinger or N. Guerard. The author was an Augustinian friar and Doctor of Theology. The book was intended for the religious education of the six-year-old Duke of Burgundy. The subjects covered include the articles of the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the commandments of God and the Church, the sacraments and the deadly sins. The artists sought to render the scenes depicted in a lively and picturesque manner.
