FURETIÈRE, Antoine - Second Plea on behalf of Mr Antoine Furetière, Abbé de Chalivoy, appealing both on the grounds of incompetent judges and on other grounds, against an alleged judgement handed down at the Bureau of the Académie Française on ( ) January 1685. Against Seraphin Regnier Desmarets, Permanent Secretary of the Académie Française (Opening title). No place, no date. In-4, 79 pp., large engraved colophon depicting an emblem held by two cherubs with the motto: ‘É duro, perch’, é vero.’ (p. 60), havana morocco binding, ribbed spine, internal perforation, gilt edges (RAPARLIER). Not listed in Tchémerzine. The second ‘factum’ was composed between October and December 1685 and saw at least three editions in Holland in 1686. This copy contains a few handwritten corrections to errors that do not appear in the known editions. For example (p. 31) ‘a favour which he would have been obliged to do, if any fellow-member’ becomes: ‘a favour which he would have been obliged to have done, if any fellow-member’; (p. 53): ‘One may judge of the beauty of the other fellow-members’ becomes: ‘‘One can judge the beauty of the other lectures’; (p. 57) ‘This is what these gentlemen of the Academy seem to be working towards, who, far from enriching the language, are impoverishing it under the pretext of purifying it’ becomes: ‘This is what these gentlemen of the Academy seem to be working towards, who, far from enriching the language, are impoverishing it under the pretext of purifying it.” Is this the first edition? The document is of great documentary interest as it allows us to see how the sessions of the Académie Française were conducted. Most of the attacks are directed at Academicians such as Tallemant, Claude Boyer, Michel Le Clerc, Quinault, Barbier-Daucour, Lavau, etc. In the second part, entitled ‘Proof’, Furetière cites a number of definitions from the Académie’s dictionary, which was then in the process of being published.
