MÉRÉ, Chevalier de – Letters. Paris, Denis Thierry & Claude Barbin, 1682. 2 vols. in-12, (4) folios, 360 pp., (6) folios, pp. 361–710, (1) folio, crossed-out inscriptions on the title pages, granulated brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine. First edition. These letters are of great interest for understanding the society of the time. Some are addressed to Ménage, the Duchess of Lesdiguières, Balzac, Madame de Maintenon, Pascal, Ninon de Lenclos and Mademoiselle de Scudéry. One of these letters recounts a conversation between the author and the Duke of La Rochefoucauld, author of the *Maxims*. It also includes the tale of the Matron of Ephesus, treated in a completely different manner to that of Saint-Evremond.
