LA PLACE, Pierre Antoine de] – Amusements, merriments and poetic frivolities. By a good Picard. London (Brussels, Adrien-François Pion), 1783. In-8, 135 (3) pp., paper slightly yellowed, red half-chag with corner pieces, ribbed spine decorated with blind-stamped thread, gilt head. (BELLEVALLÉE). GAY I, 197. Edition printed by Adrien-François Pion on the Prince de Ligne’s presses in Brussels. Following *Coup d’œil sur Belœil*, *Colette et Lucas* and other works, this is apparently the last book printed on these private presses, which for over 150 years were believed to have been based at Belœil. Subsequent editions bearing the Belœil mark were produced in Brussels by Pion and his son-in-law Haÿez. This collection of tales, songs and satirical and risqué epigrams was compiled by Pierre-Antoine de La Place (1707–1793), a familiar figure at the prince’s small court. A native of Calais, this permanent secretary of the Academy of Arras was best known for his translations of English novels and plays. He is credited with the first attempt at translating Shakespeare’s major plays, published in his *Théâtre anglais* (1745–1748). This volume was produced by the Prince de Ligne’s private printing press. These ‘amusements’ consist of songs, tales and rather free-spirited epigrams.
