Description
LATE 18TH-CENTURY FRENCH SCHOOL, CIRCLE OF FRANÇOIS ANDRÉ VINCENT (1746–1816) The Death of Seneca Pen and brown ink, brown wash 28 x 43 cm A prominent Stoic philosopher, playwright and Roman statesman of the 1st century AD, Seneca had served as tutor and then as an adviser to Emperor Nero. His fall from favour reached its peak in the year 65, when he was accused of complicity in the Pisonian conspiracy, a failed plot to assassinate the prince. Faced with this threat of treason, Nero ordered him to take his own life, forcing the philosopher to orchestrate his own suicide in accordance with Roman tradition. A detailed account of this tragic and theatrical end has come down to us thanks to the famous Annals of the historian Tacitus, who depicts the philosopher’s final moments as the ultimate embodiment of Stoic fortitude in the face of imperial tyranny.
