Description
Tobacco jars
Made of wood. Decorated with relief carvings and intaglio work. Featuring two cylindrical compartments, each resting on six small feet shaped like goats’ hooves. The first jar is adorned with architectural niches, separated by columns. The first bears the date ‘1901’, set amongst laurel branches, above which a pair of doves are preening each other. The second is adorned with a blooming daisy, the third with a weeping willow, and the last with a fern. The lid, which is recessed and has a crenellated rim, is decorated with a bird perched on a branch. The second pot is adorned with the monogram ‘SV’, set within a laurel wreath tied with military braid. In the niches on either side are a bowl of flowers, a bouquet in a vase and a rose in a pot. The lid is adorned with the bird’s nest and holds an egg to be hatched. They are mounted on an ornate back panel, featuring a central shelf (perhaps for pipes?) and designed to allow the two pots to be carried (not original).
