Description
A water bottle known as a ‘pèlerine’
Made from engraved, polychrome coloquinte gourd. It has a double-walled body, decorated with several oval panels in the upper section. These are decorated with a perch and a parrot in the first panel, the coat of arms of Napoleon Bonaparte within a laurel wreath in the second, and the maker’s name dated ‘FRANCOIS // LAMBARDI // 1869’. The lower section features four medallions, each decorated as follows: a man playing with his cats; a man dining with his friends; a harbour scene, with a boat setting sail and barrels on the quay; and finally, a winegrower drawing wine from a barrel. A large stylised flower adorns the background.
