Description
Set of three snuff boxes Made of horn and metal. Rectangular in shape and modelled on a book, all three open via one or more metal hinges. The first, known as the ‘miser’s snuffbox’, is decorated with engraved flowers and bears the date ‘1827’ and a view of a carpenter’s workshop, with his tools clearly visible. The second snuffbox features, on the lid, a baking shovel and a dough scraper crossed over one another, and on the reverse side the initials ‘FR’ set within a compass rose. The edge is edged with a brass band. The last snuffbox bears the date ‘1816’ on the lid, beneath a vase from which flowers emerge. The reverse side is decorated with a lively scene of a joiner’s or carpenter’s workshop.
