Joseph Ottinger, Munich
Engraving on paper, cut out, with painted, metallic and textile highlights. Rectangular in shape, it depicts the Holy Family in Joseph’s workshop, with Jesus sweeping up wood shavings from the floor. The Virgin Mary is spinning, whilst Saint Joseph is carving a piece of wood. The scene is set in a room with colonnades and an oculus, decorated with chandeliers and Joseph’s carpenter’s tools. The engraving features openwork filled with fabric, thin sheets of gold or silver metal, or coloured paper. It bears the title ‘IESUS MARIA IOSEPH’ followed by a text in German. Signed ‘Ottinger in Munchen’.
