Description
Altar cross Made of wood, metal, fabric and rush strips. A cross with diamond-shaped ends resting on a rectangular plinth with openwork decoration. Wooden core entirely covered with strips of rush, secured with nails. Openwork decoration, with a black-coated fabric background on the upper part of the cross. Rich decoration on one side, with the Camargue cross at the centre, surrounded by flowers. Above this, the trigram ‘INRI’ surrounded by the Arma Christi and hearts in the spandrels. At the ends of the arms, compass roses, with doves of the Holy Spirit holding what appear to be leafy branches. On the other side, various stars are placed at the centre of the lozenges. The uprights and arms are entirely decorated with geometric friezes, with the nails providing additional decoration. Camargue, late 19th century Total height: 56 cm – Width: 36.7 cm Damage and losses
