Description
Peasant-soldier’s staff
Made of carved wood and metal. A simple, straight pommel, concealing a whistle and bearing the initial ‘P’ in English script. The shaft is carved, in a series of superimposed registers, with a team of horses, a ring featuring a central rectangular cartouche bordered by zigzags and bearing the initials ‘AR’. This is followed by a band featuring a cannon and a ploughshare, then a band depicting agricultural tools such as a rake, a scythe, a sickle and a cartouche bearing the date ‘1883’. The shaft ends with a snake devouring another snake, both very simply rendered. Simple ferrule at the base.
