Description
MONTBELIARD – Large dish with a central depression, featuring a relief decoration known as ‘à la Tempérance’. In the centre, an allegory of Temperance presenting a cup, with the inscription ‘TEMPERANTIA’. Around the rim, the four elements are depicted in oval medallions separated by figures in profile. On the rim, the liberal arts accompanied by Minerva, in twelve oval medallions separated by mascarons or fantastical animals, all set within a rich decoration of coiled leather bands on an amati background. In the centre of the reverse, the medallion in relief depicts François BRIOT, with the exergue ‘SCULPEBAT FRANCISCUS BRIOT’. Diameter: 45 cm François BRIOT, admitted to the farriers’ guild in 1580; all trace of him is lost in 1616, the probable date of his death. In fine condition for a piece of this period; the reverse is oxidised, with minimal consolidation welds that are very well executed and practically invisible.
