(16th-century book of miniatures) Liturgical PSALTER. Manuscript on parchment, comprising 156 leaves, with a calendar written in black and red calligraphy. The text of the psalter is richly illuminated and adorned with three full-page miniatures; the edges are gilded. Most of the folios are calligraphically inscribed on both sides, containing invocations, the Gloria, and various other prayers in Latin. Numerous polychrome initial letters and capitals with gold highlights; the finely calligraphed pages are ruled in red ink and decorated with rectangles featuring varied polychrome floral motifs on the outer side margins. Full brown shagreen binding (from the second half of the 19th century) adorned with a rich pattern of cold-stamped fleurs-de-lis, presented in an antique display case with a blue silk cushion, glazed (with bevelled glass) Page dimensions: 17.5 x 11 cm Attribution of provenance according to the family tradition of the last owners: Louis-Sextius Jarente de La Bruyère Gothic script, similar in style to Textura; several possible scribes (2?) Calendar written in calligraphy in red, blue and black, with headings in red (including the following saints: 1 February: Saint Brice; 1 March: Saint Aubin; 1 August: Saint Peter; 25 August: Saint Louis, King of France) End-lines and initials highlighted in liquid gold against red, brown and blue backgrounds The painted margins feature a variety of coloured foliage motifs, with polychrome floral and fruit designs, often enhanced with additional gold highlights Condition report: In very good overall condition; note minor wear on the first two miniatures First miniature: The Crucifixion; note minor surface wear on the blue of the Virgin’s tunic Second miniature: The Annunciation; note slight surface wear near the book held by the Virgin Third miniature: King David with his arms raised; a curious presence in the sky of this miniature—a small figure of an archangel? holding a sword (depicted in monochrome red) There are a few small and skilful historical restorations on the outer corner of the upper margin of some leaves, involving the insertion of small rectangular pieces of parchment 17th-century ownership: Regarding the former ownership of this liturgical manuscript by a community associated with the Order of the Récollets during the 17th century, various later handwritten entries can be seen on the last three leaves attesting to the use of this psalter in the 17th century, with numerous records of the deaths of sisters and brothers dated to the 17th century, and burials at the Récollets (dated 1640, 1641, 1648, 1649, 1650, 1656, 1672, 1681)
