RUSSIA A large silver-plated covered bowl, 84 zolotniks (875 thousandths), with engraved and chiselled decoration featuring stylised, interlaced foliage; engraved in the centre with a dedication in French: ‘Prince Serge Galitzine Cannes Golf Club 1894 ’, surmounting a neo-Gothic arcade; the lid is decorated in the same style, and the handle features a fluted design with foliage (the top element is missing). Some signs of wear and minor dents. Saint Petersburg, circa 1890. Silversmith: SAZIKOV, bearing the mark of Supplier to the Imperial Court and a medal from the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London featuring the profiles of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. H. 38 cm. Weight: 1199.37 g. Provenance Golf trophy presented to the winner, Prince Sergei Sergeyevich Golitsyn (1863–1923) History The Cannes Golf Club was founded in 1891 in Mandelieu-la-Napoule by Grand Duke Michel Mikhailovich of Russia (1861–1929), who had developed a passion for golf following a stay in Scotland. It was the first golf club on the Côte d’Azur and is one of the oldest courses in France. From the very beginning, the club was frequented by the international winter visitors staying on the Riviera, bringing together English, Russian and members of the European aristocracy.
