Mahal carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), central Persia, circa 1940–1960 247 x 174 cm The carpet is adorned with a central red diamond on a navy blue ground, enhanced by a polychrome floral design. The entire composition is embellished with four red spandrels. An old red border featuring a garland of geometric flowers frames the composition. Sultanabad, now known as Arak, was at that time a new town with a population of some 10,000. To sustain such a high level of production, the looms were scattered across a radius of around one hundred kilometres. Among the many villages in the region, Mahal and Sarouk, which enjoy an international reputation, are particularly noteworthy. The term ‘Mahal’ refers to carpets from the central region of Persia. Mahal carpets are meticulously crafted in both technique and design: they are finely knotted with high-quality wool, feature a variety of colours (blue, red, ochre, etc.), and have a short pile that brings out the vibrancy of the designs. The carpets are decorated with medallions or bouquets of flowers (as in Sarouk carpets), or with repetitive patterns identical to those found on Signs of wear, probably faded and frayed
