Melayer carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), North-west Persia, circa 1900–1930 192 x 123 cm This carpet is decorated with the Herati pattern on a blue-red ground. This motif consists of a rhombus formed by curved stems, enclosing a rosette and surmounted by a palmette at each vertex, repeated endlessly, with four sickle-shaped leaves side by side in each instance. This design adorned Herat carpets (from which it takes its name). A tobacco-coloured border featuring a garland of geometric flowers is framed by two counter-borders. Shows signs of wear and fraying.
