Description
Sebastiano Conca
(Gaete 1680-1764 Naples)
Assumption of the Virgin
Oil on paper mounted on canvas
40 x 22 cm.
Our painted study is undoubtedly preparatory to a work now lost. The painting combines Conca's various influences: it borrows from Carracci the dynamic pose of the Virgin, her arms outstretched and her eyes directed towards heaven (as in The Assumption by Bonasoni, Bologna, Pinacoteca Nazionale, inv. 455). The grouping of figures is inherited from his master Solimena (as in The Assumption, Mulhouse, Musée des Beaux-Arts, inv. D 71.2.44). With this painting, Conca showed that he belonged to the Baroque movement. The work is based on a skilful arrangement, feigned instability and the primacy of effects. The figures are arranged in an upward movement, leading our gaze towards the Virgin, who is bathed in light. The expressiveness of the faces is heightened by the turbulent sky and the billowing drapery, bringing out the sublimity of the scene. Finally, the light da sotto in su adopted lends a certain power to this Assumption. The close proximity of the two angels on either side of the Virgin to those of another Assumption in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples (inv. unknown) suggests that this work dates from the years 1645-1650.
