The Four Cardinal Virtues
Oil on board: H. 45 x W. 56 cm
These oils on cardboard represent allegories of the four cardinal virtues: Prudence with a mirror and a putto strangling a snake, Temperance pouring water between two containers, Strength holding a shield, accompanied by a lion and Justice holding a pair of scales with a putto holding a sword. This iconography is based on that established in the 16th century by Cesare Ripa in his famous treatise on Iconology. Depicted seated on clouds and seen da sotto in su in the midst of feigned architecture, these oil paintings are surely modelli for frescoes intended to adorn the ceiling of a cupola. These compositions, which reflect both the influence of Rococo art with motifs such as clouds and putti, and a Neoclassical style with their rigorous composition and simple treatment of drapery, were probably painted around 1770.
