Description
Robert Lefèvre (Bayeux 1755 - 1830 Paris) Portrait of Charles-Victor Prévost d'Arlincourt, known as the Viscount d'Arlincourt (1788-1856) Oil on canvas 33 x 25 cm. Our tableautin is a sketch for the monumental portrait (216 x 140 cm.) presented at the Salon of 1822 and offered to the Louvre in 1968 by the model's great-granddaughter Anne-Marie d'Estournel, née Marquiset (inv. RF 1968 8). Born into a family hard hit by the French Revolution, Arlincourt enjoyed the protection of Napoleon Bonaparte during the Empire, who appointed him squire to Madame Mère and then auditor to the Conseil d'État in 1811. After the fall of the Empire, he joined the Restoration and pursued a literary career under the title of Viscount d'Arlincourt. He first gained notoriety with the epic poem Charlemagne ou La Caroléide (1818), a vast fresco inspired by medieval history. His greatest success, however, was his novel Le Solitaire (1821), which had an exceptional European impact and was adapted numerous times. He continued in this vein with Le Renégat (1822), Ipsiboé (1823) and L'Étrangère (1825), works characteristic of early French Romanticism. Nicknamed the "Prince of Romantics" by his admirers, for a time he rivalled the great literary figures of his time in fame, before becoming the target of critics who derided his emphatic style. In the 1830s, he devoted himself mainly to the historical novel, publishing Les Rebelles sous Charles V (1832), Les Écorcheurs (1833) and Le Brasseur roi (1834). Faithful to his legitimist convictions, he also took part in the political debate through several writings published after the 1848 revolution. Today, the Vicomte d'Arlincourt remains an emblematic but largely forgotten figure of French Romanticism, whose fame was considerable during the first half of the XIXᵉ century. The model's descendants include members of the following families: Benoist de Laumont, Bernard de Sassenay, d'Estourmel, Fornacciari, Fournier, Galouzeau de Villepin, Marquiset, Terré
