Description
John Hoppner 1758-1810
Portrait of Elizabeth Godden (née Houghton), Lady Taylor.
Oil on canvas
64 x 77.8 cm
This fine portrait by John Hoppner depicts Elizabeth Godden. Born on 12 November 1758 in Jamaica, she is known from another portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). She married John Taylor in 1778 and had six children with him. Her descendants include the Watson Taylor family and the Mayne family.
John Hoppner was a British painter of German origin. His talent was noticed at an early age and he was awarded a scholarship by King George III to study at the Royal Academy, where he won the prestigious gold medal for history painting in 1782. He soon turned to portraiture out of economic necessity. Deeply influenced by the style of Joshua Reynolds, he quickly won over the British aristocracy and established himself as the main rival of the painter Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830), who was the official Court painter, while Hoppner won the favour of the Prince of Wales and the leading ladies of London society.
This portrait was engraved in the black manner by James Scott around 1780.
