Description
Théodore Gudin (1802-1880) Storm scene Oil on panel 19 x 24 without frame 54 x 58 cm with frame This painting is a fine example of the art of Théodore Gudin, famous for being, with Louis-Philippe Crépin (1772-1851), one of the first two official painters of the French Navy. After abandoning his studies at the École navale and enlisting briefly in the US Navy, he returned to Paris in 1822 to join the studio of the painter Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824). He exhibited at the Salon from 1822, and made a name for himself with works influenced by Romanticism and the English school. Appointed painter to the Royal Navy in 1830, he became very close to the government. During the reign of Louis-Philippe, he was made a baron and received a monumental commission for nearly a hundred paintings for the Musée de Versailles to illustrate French naval history. He remained in Napoleon III's favour and accompanied him on the Algiers expedition in 1830, where he produced a large number of sketches. He went into exile in England after the fall of the Empire in 1870, before returning to France where he died in 1880.
