This painting of André Vésale has been wrongly identified as a representation of Ambroise Paré.
For many years, biographies, articles and television programmes devoted to Ambroise Paré have been illustrated by a painting by James Bertrand held in the Musée Charles-de-Bruyères in Remiremont. In an article published in 2024, Jacques Chevallier showed that James Bertrand's painting had been wrongly identified with Ambroise Paré and was in fact a copy of a painting entitled Vésale et le Christ, painted in 1848 by the Belgian artist Édouard Hammam and held at Cornell University in the United States (Jacques Chevallier, "Mystère autour d'un tableau représentant Vésale", Histoire des sciences médicales, 2024/1, p. 22-31).
