Description
Glötzle Ludwig (Immenstadt, 1848 - Munich, 1929)
Modelo for Christ before Pilate, 1881-1895.
Oil on canvas,
35 x 24.5 cm
Our tableautin is the modello for the first work on the Stations of the Cross commissioned from Ludwig Glötzle in 1881 by Franz Albert Eder (1818 - 1890), Archbishop of Salzburg (Austria), for his Cathedral of St Rupert, a major building in Bavarian Baroque. It took just fifteen years to build the cathedral, which was completed in 1628, but the painted decorations were never finished.
The son of a Catholic lithographer and a Protestant mother, Glötzle entered the Munich Academy in 1860 and specialised in religious decors, considering himself a "late historical Nazarene".
Our modello has all the qualities of a Nazarene painting, combining a tribute to Raphael, a discreet romanticism and a few hints of symbolism in an original composition. The central figure is no longer Christ, but the prosecutor presenting him to Pilate seated on the Lithostrôtos. On the left, draped in red, Christ almost turns his back to the viewer, revealing his haloed profile. The other protagonists are all in action: the woman bringing the water, Pilate deep in thought, the prosecutor demonstrating, the seated man judging and the soldier holding Christ by a rope. The final work, measuring almost 4 x 2 metres, is installed in the first lunette of the side chapels and opens the Way of the Cross. The entire cycle then responds to the main altarpiece by Arsenio Mascagni (1579 - 1636) on the theme of Christ's resurrection. The painter's work did not stop there: the numerous studies he made for this work were regularly used to create other figures in neighbouring works and other Stations of the Cross, including the one in the church of Vorderburg, in the far west of Bavaria.
